Uppinangady: The Dakshina Kannada Police have arrested an absconding inter-state marijuana peddler at Bairikatte in Vittal on Tuesday, July 17.
The arrested has been identified as Moideen Nawaz alias Nawaz, a resident of Uppala in Kasargod.
The police said that the crime came to light on 23 December 2017, while Puttur Rural Police Inspector Gopal Krishna Naik along with his staff was on night patrol. When the team asked a Honda City car (MH-04-BW-8080) which was travelling from Gundya to stop, it drove away. Nawaz and his two accomplices parked the car some distance away from the checkpoint and fled the scene.
When the police inspected the car, they found 81.635-kilograms of ganja wrapped in tarpaulin bags. The total worth of the contraband was estimated to be Rs 9,53,080 Lakhs. A case was registered under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NPDS) Act. They also launched a manhunt to nab the trio.
According to the police, they received a credible intelligence that Nawaz, one of the accused in the case, was visiting his wife’s house at Bairikatte in Vittal on July 17. Acting on the tip-off, the police arrested him and produced him before the court.
