Mangaluru: Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Murugan has banned religious speaker Dr Zakir Naik from entering the city. Dr Naik was scheduled to deliver a keynote address during a programme here organized by South Kanara Salafi Movement (SKSM) on January 3, 2016.

In its official blog, the Mangaluru city police posted, “The Police Commissioner, Mangaluru City has issued prohibitory orders Under Section 144 CrPC banning Dr.Zakir Naik from entering the Police Commissionerate limits of Mangaluru City and participating in any public meeting/function for a period of 7 days from 31-12-2015 to 06-01-2016.”

Speaking to NewsKarnataka, Commissioner Murugan said that the decision to ban Dr Naik was taken foreseeing tension in the communally sensitive city and also after having a close watch on Dr Naik’s video footages delivering speeches which allegedly incites communal stress.

It may be recalled that saffron outfits had held numerous protests and submitted memorandums to the district administration and the police to prohibit the scholar from entering Dakshina Kannada. On the other hand, Minister Ramanath Rai had supported the SKSM’s move to invite Dr Naik and had also urged people of all faith to participate in the programme.
