Mangaluru: The public here has asked the police department to take stringent action against the street vendors who occupy footpaths for their business.
During a weekly phone-in -programme at the Commissioner of Police office on Friday, February 15, a caller informed that some street vendors set up heir stalls outside the Central Market disturbing the businessmen having their shops inside. Hence, measures should be taken against those who refuse to go to the vending zones approved by the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), he urged.
Responding to it, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) Uma Prashanth said that the police department would approach MCC) to sort out the issue. “As the issue is pertaining to MCC, we will inform them to take action”, she said.
Though MCC has made a separate vending zone near Nehru Maidan for the street hawkers, several of them are still using footpaths.
Another caller from Kinnigoli complained about vehicles being parked on the footpaths at Kinnigoli. “Pedestrians find it very difficult to use the footpaths,” he said.
DCP Uma Prashanth promised of taking measures in this regard. Meanwhile, issues regarding irregular bus service between Kotekar and Madyar, liquor shops being opened round the clock at Bejai, eve-teasing by the miscreants at Krishnapur, parking space encroachment by the private buildings among other issues were raised, to which police promised of appropriate measures.
DCP Hanumantharaya, ACPs Manjunath Shetty, Srinivas Gowda R, Madan Gaonkar and Inspector Shivaprakash were present.
