N. Nagaraja Poovani, a distinguished retired Hindi lecturer from SDM College, Ujire, and a well-known journalist for a Kannada daily, passed away at his residence in Vidyanagar, Ujire, Belthangady taluk, on Monday. The 87-year-old, affectionately known as ‘Na Ujire,’ is survived by his wife and a son.
Having dedicated 40 years to reporting in Belthangady taluk, Poovani was a stalwart in the field. He served as the president of the Belthangady Taluk Working Journalists’ Association, earning numerous accolades throughout his career. Notable awards include the Karnataka Sahitya Academy Award, Ratnakaravarni Award, Tulu Mahaneeyaru Award from Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy, and the district Rajyotsava Award.
Poovani, a prolific writer, contributed over 60 stories, 80 poems, and numerous articles. His legacy encompasses not only his literary contributions but also his significant impact on journalism in the region. The Mangaluru community mourns the loss of a respected figure in both academia and journalism.
