Mangaluru: A friend in need is a friend indeed, goes an old adage. In this materialistic world where money is the master, ‘Sangeeth Bahar’, a group of amateur singers from Mangaluru city upheld the spirit of friendship in a rather unique way.
A sassy hall of the plush Ocean Pearl Hotel, on Sunday reverberated tunes and melodies of the era bygone. While some relished the soothing evergreen classics, the members jumped on to shake their legs for some groovy, fast numbers. All in all fun and frolic filled the air. After a while, the members ( dressed according to filmy theme) divided themselves into groups and tested their musical skills and knowledge through an array of tricky games assorted for Anthakshari.
From an outset, it so seemed that the elite class from the city had come under one roof to have a break from their routine, but it wasn’t so.
Soon, Surekha, a lady in a long white outfit took the centre stage. Jagdish Karia, city-based businessman and an important member of Sangeeth Bahar took the onus of talking to the members about the event. It was on July 23, 2017 that Sangeeth Bahar had held a massive musical extravaganza at the Town Hall.
The brimming audience knew it well that they were there for a cause and the cause was to be silverlining in life of Surekha, a singer and a much loved member of Sangeeth Bahar who has been diagnosed with cancer. Soon, a close acquaintance of Mr Karia and yet another businessman from the city (who does not wish to be named) came forward to become patron of the musical event, the proceeds of which were meant to go to Surekha for her treatment.
On Sunday, the event was all about letting Surekha know that the ‘Sangeeth Bahar’ family was with her. A chirpy Surekha turned melancholic as Sangeeth Bahar members handed over a particular amount to her. Speaking to her extended family of Sangeeth Bahar, an emotional Surekha spoke about her love for music and her battle with cancer and thanked the Sangeeth Bahar members for their love and support.
The musical delight continued as Surekha sat and clapped and cheer her friends’ performances.
About Sangeeth Bahar
The inception of Sangeeth Bahar itself is marvelous. Amateur singers from the city who were united under a group named Raag and Rhythm, spread out their wings and soon they had 26 members in the team. They used to sing and perform during their monthly meets, but for the first time, the 26 amateur singers took to stage on July 23 for ‘Sangeeth Bahar’ event at Town Hall, held for Surekha’s cause.
Today, they are all proud Sangeeth Bahar team as they feel that the event was a landmark in their lives. Umakanth Nayak, a real estate consultant says that all the members come from well to do background and singing for them is only a passion.
“For the first time, through Sangeeth Bahar programme, non-professional took audience by storm. We do karaoke singing and there are no instrumentals with us. But, we are passionate about our singing,” says Nayak, who adds that Sangeeth Bahar has engineers, businessmen, retired police personnel, bankers and others who are all here for melodies and not money.
However, Sangeeth Bahar team has already emerged winner in race for humanity.
