Mangaluru: The raids in Mangaluru Prison and the probe following the same have left the police shocked.
During every raid, the police had confiscated a good number of mobile phones. Surprisingly, the prisoners had beforehand destroyed the SIM cards used by them. However, inorder to dig out the details of the SIM cards used by the inmates, the police started a probe and unearthed startling facts based on International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number of the mobile phones.
It is said that one of the SIM cards used by an inmate was “purchased” from a shop named “Cell Magic” at Shakthinagar, which never existed! Further, the SIM is registered in the name of Sumithra from Shakthinagar, who has no connection with the inmate at all. When the police questioned her, Sumithra was perplexed and claimed to have never bought a SIM card from Shakthinagar.
Later, the Barke police nabbed a person in connection with the supply of SIM card. With the police tracking the details of the mobile phones on the basis of the IMEI numbers, sources say that the prisoners have been trying to tamper with the IMEI numbers so that their details are never traced.
Many feel that it is time the authorities brought in stringent rules with regard to sale of SIM cards because there are all possibilities of innocents falling prey to devious acts.
