Mangaluru: The sixth edition of the ‘Pili Nalike’ competition (tiger dance) will be held at the Volley Ball ground near the Mangala Stadium on October 7.
The organiser of the ‘Pili Nalike’ and Dakshina Kannada district Youth Congress president Mithun Rai told mediapersons here on Saturday, October 5, that the competition is being conducted to provide a platform for Pili Nalike artistes to showcase their talents.
He informed that a total of nine selected teams comprising around 15 persons each, in traditional tiger costumes will dance to the tunes of the tase (percussion instrument). While the winning team will be presented a trophy and cash prize of Rs 2.5 lakhs, the runners-up team will be awarded Rs 1.50 lakhs. The team that secures the third place will be awarded Rs 1 lakh. The other teams participating in the competition will be awarded a consolation prize of Rs 20,000 in cash.
Meanwhile, the best tase player, best individual dancer and best child dancer will also receive cash prizes of Rs 30,000 each, he added.
Speaking about the intention behind organising the competition, he said, “As the tiger dance has a historical significance, our main objective is to enliven the traditional ‘pili vesha’. It is an effort on our part to encourage best teams, while also keep the tradition alive for future generations. We are also producing a Tulu movie ‘Pili Nalike’, to shed light on the life of the folk artistes and a poster of the same will be released during the occasion.”

Mithun Rai also informed that, in order to assist the artistes of ‘Pili Nalike’, a separate trust has been formed, the logo of which will be launched on the same day. “Various welfare programmes like the construction of houses, provision of insurance benefits and scholarships for the children of Pili Nalike artistes etc. will be taken up through this trust,” he said.
The co-organiser and local television channel Namma TV managing director Dr Shivasharan Shetty and anchor Naveen Shetty were also present.
