In a significant development coinciding with the institution’s elevation to university status, St Aloysius College proudly launched the pioneering “Diploma in Gerontology” program. The inaugural batch, consisting of 22 trained enthusiasts, completed the course from the college, stepping out to serve the urgent and vital cause of gerontology. This milestone achievement is a testament to the college’s commitment to education and societal welfare.
Gerontology, the study of the social, cultural, psychological, cognitive, and biological aspects of aging, was explored in depth during the course. The college program delved into the multidimensional realm of aging, covering biological, psychological, and social dimensions of the elderly experience. Notably, gerontology distinguishes itself from geriatrics, focusing on the broader aspects beyond the treatment of existing diseases in older adults.
The course included insightful discussions with distinguished resource persons on the challenges of caregiving and firsthand experiences from primary caregivers. Field visits to diverse aged care facilities, including ‘Pashant Nivas’ and ‘Holy Rosary Home for Senior Citizens,’ provided students with practical insights into the varied needs and care approaches for the elderly.
Despite the academic rigor, with two assignments and evaluatory assessments, the true essence of the program lay in exploring sensitive subjects that prompted profound reflection among participants. The success of the pioneer batch recognizes the potential of education and awareness in influencing positive change in gerontological planning and care.
St Aloysius College played a pivotal role, providing not just a platform but also instilling the confidence to venture into uncharted territory and make a meaningful difference. Gratitude was extended to key dignitaries for their unwavering support, with special acknowledgment to HOD Dr. Shwetha Rasquinha for guidance and coordination.
The official valedictory ceremony on February 29 marked the successful culmination of the program, graced by the presence of rector Fr Melwin Pinto, principal Fr Praveen Martis, Dr. Charles V Furtado, Dr. Shwetha Rasquinha, and other dignitaries. Certificates of course completion were distributed, officially concluding the transformative journey through the diploma in gerontology program at St Aloysius College. The program has equipped graduates with knowledge, compassion, and a sense of purpose to champion the well-being and dignity of the elderly in their communities.
