In a bid to enhance voter awareness, the SVEEP committee of Dakshina Kannada has introduced a pioneering initiative called ‘Election Focus’ – an e-magazine to be disseminated via social media platforms. This theme-based digital publication aims to educate voters on various facets of the voting process, including information on electronic voting machines (EVMs), the significance of voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT), and the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) preparations in Dakshina Kannada.
Promoting Secure and Transparent Voting
Anandh K, the nodal officer of the SVEEP committee and CEO of the zilla panchayat, underscores the magazine’s motto: ‘For secure and transparent voting.’
Informative Content
The inaugural issue of the e-magazine delves into the history and implementation of EVMs in Indian elections. It traces the evolution of EVMs since their inception in 1983, highlighting their role in ensuring electoral integrity. Moreover, it elucidates the introduction of VVPAT in the 2014 Lok Sabha election, providing voters with the means to verify their choices.
Comprehensive Coverage
The e-magazine offers detailed insights into various aspects of EVM management, including their secure storage post-elections, standard operating procedures (SOPs) during polling, and the stringent security measures in place at the strong rooms housing the machines.
Wide Dissemination
To maximize outreach, the e-magazine is being circulated through WhatsApp groups established by officials across all administrative levels. This strategy aims to engage a broad spectrum of voters and disseminate crucial information effectively.
Ongoing Efforts
Having already released two editions, the committee is gearing up to unveil the third installment, focusing on online applications provided by the ECI for voter registration and related services. Notably, while the concept of an e-magazine was introduced during the 2023 assembly elections, the current thematic approach underscores the CEO’s commitment to enhancing voter education and participation.
