Mangaluru: Tension rose in the city when an administrator of a mosque was attacked by a mob for allegedly harassing a woman. Learning about the incident, locals rushed in support of the administrator citing that it was a case of mistaken identity.

The incident took place at Balepuni in Mudipu on Monday, November 30.

According to sources, Muneer Ahmed Saqafi, one of the administrators of a mosque in BC Road was riding towards his house in Kolnad. When he reached Salethur, a group of men waylaid and hit him with rods. Looking at this, the locals rushed and released Muneer. The locals said that the attackers had mistaken Muneer to another man who is charged of making lewd gestures at a zilla panchayat female member and beat him.

Later, social activist S K Hazar and Zilla Panchayat member Santosh Kumar Rai Boliyar intervened and a meeting was called at the Konaje police station premises. Hazar and Santosh Kumar convinced the gathering to forget the incident and maintain peace as panchayat elections were around the corner.

Konaje police said that action will be taken against the man charged of harassing the woman if found guilty.
