Tribute to a gentle, spiritual and generous leader- Fr Vijay K Prabhu

fr vijay 15092020Mangaluru: Fr Vijay Kumar Prabhu SJ, former Dean of Philosophy, Satya Nilayam, Chennai, passed away early on Tuesday, September 15, at the Father Mullers Hospital here. He was 80 years old.

There will not be a funeral mass and the burial service was conducted at the Jeppu Cemetery today at 3.30 PM. Only a few will be attending the burial service owing to the COVID restrictions.

Fr Vijay, who was residing at the Father’s Residence, Fatima Retreat House, was a specialist in the field of philosophy and taught at the St Joseph’s Seminary in Mangaluru, Sacred Heart College in Shembaganur, and Satya Nilayam in Chennai. He also served as the Dean of Philosophy at Satya Nilayam, Chennai from 1992 to 1996.

He was a librarian at ISI, Bengaluru from 2009 to 2010, Province Coordinator of Formation (PCF) from 1999 to 2002, and Provincial of Jesuits of the Karnataka Province from 2004 to 2009.

Born in 1940, Fr Vijay was known for having a great capacity to be gentle and was also a generous leader. During his lifetime, he touched many people’s lives with his warmth and affection.

According to Fr Olvin Veigas SJ, Fr Vijay was always up for new ventures, initiatives and enterprises. He believed in people and had a lot of confidence in them. Fr Vijay took a keen interest in people’s lives and encouraged them.

He was also known to be a deeply spiritual person and was ever ready to give spiritual retreats at the new retreat house – Xavier Sadan – in Mysore and at the Fatima Retreat House, Mangaluru.

Fr Vijay will be missed by all those whose lives he touched and influenced. May his soul find eternal peace.
