Mangaluru: As the central trade unions have called for a nationwide bandh on January 8 and 9 to protest against the policies for workers adopted by the Narendra Modi-led union government, normal life is likely to be hit in the next two days in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.
The Dakshina Kannada district unit of CITU has sought the support of all the bus, autorickshaw, taxi, hotel and other workers’ associations for the scheduled bandh. Many private buses are also seen stuck with pamphlets stating “no bus service tomorrow.” However, there was mixed response from the autorickshaw unions to the scheduled bandh. While some autorickshaw drivers informed that they are supporting the bandh, some others said they are not.
The Dakshina Kannada District Bus Owners Association President Dilraj Alva told Newskarnataka that there will be bus service on both January 8 and 9 as the workers had consented to work. “We will run our buses as our staff has agreed to do its duty”, he informed.
However, the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) DK District Secretary Sunil Kumar Bajal informed that the working class would voluntarily support the scheduled bandh. Emergency services including ambulance, medical shops and vehicles carrying milk have been kept out of the purview of the bandh, he informed.
Schools and Colleges to shut down
The deputy commissioners of both Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts have declared holiday for schools and colleges following the bandh call. Hence, all the schools and colleges in both the districts will remained closed on Tuesday, January 8.
Karwar district administration too has declared holiday on January 8.
