Mangaluru: Parts of the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts witnessed heavy downpours accompanied by lightning and thunder on Tuesday, December 8 night. This was the effect of a cyclone, according to the meteorological department’s prediction.

The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Center (KSNDMC) informed that while Beltangady, Bantwal, Sullia, Mangaluru, Karkala, Hebri, Udupi, and Padubidri received a good amount of rain, Moodbidri received the highest rainfall recording 69.5 mm.

The weather department has predicted that the coastal region of Karnataka will likely witness rains over the next two days as the cyclone is presently located at an altitude of 3.1 km above sea level between southeast Arabian Sea and Indian ocean, near the equator. This is causing a rapid movement of clouds which results in the rain.

During the daytime, the conditions were hot and humid and the plateau regions below the hills received a half an hour of rains in the evening.

Many areas saw power cuts till late in the night due to the strong winds and heavy downpour.

Arecanut growers in Sullia suffered a lot of inconvenience owing to the sudden burst of rains as the harvested produce they had placed in the verandah of their homes to dry got drenched in the rains.
