Mangaluru: Karnataka Mahila Congress Chief Dr Pushpa Amarnath sought the support of women to all the Congress candidates who are contesting in the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) election on the grounds that the Congress is the only party that is favouring the women.

Speaking to mediapersons here on Wednesday, November 6 she said that though the BJP government had promised of providing 50 per cent reservation for women in all sectors, it has completely forgotten to fulfil this promise. “ Beti Bachao, Beti Padavo slogan was limited to the advertisement only and a huge amount has been spent on such advertisements. But, the BJP government has no concern for the women and it has been proven in the last six years of BJP administration,” she stressed.

Informing about the pro-people programmes of the Congress government, she said that the popular Anna Bhagya, Ksheera Bhagya schemes and Indira canteen was introduced during the Congress government. These schemes and more have been exceptionally beneficial to the people. However, no such pro-people programmes were introduced by the existing BJP government. There is a deliberate effort by the ruling BJP government to remove the flagship programmes of the Congress government. Hence, people should not be misguided by the false assurances of the BJP during the MCC election.

When asked about mismanagement of Indira Canteen in Mangaluru, she clarified that the Congress government introduced Indira Canteen in order to help the poor people. “If there is an allegation over the management of Indira Canteen, a probe should be conducted immediately and guilty should be punished. However, such pro-people schemes must not be withdrawn on lame reasons,” she stressed.

When reporters pointed out the corruption-riddled ADB scheme and irregularities in its implementation in MCC during the regime of the Congress, She said that she was unaware of such issues. “The Congress party did take up various developmental works when it was in power in the MCC. If there were misappropriations in the implementation of ADB scheme, I will discuss with our senior leaders,” she said.

National Mahila Congress general secretary Janet D’Souza, District Mahila Congress president Shalet Pinto, election observer Savitha Ramesh among others were present.
