Mangaluru: The Preediv Art Gallery in Bejai opened its doors for the first time since 2012, to host a unique mixed art exhibition. What’s so unique about this exhibition? All the paintings were made by Zena Colaco, a hearing and speech impaired young Mangalurean woman. The three-day exhibition was inaugurated at the gallery on Friday, January 11, at 10.30 AM. Zena’s art will be on display at the gallery from 10.30 AM to 6.30 PM from January 11 till 13.
St. Joseph’s Seminary Rector, Fr. Joseph Martis was the chief guest of the event. Renowned novelist Giselle Mehta was the guest of honour.
This is Zena’s third solo art exhibition, her first being the ‘Sounds of Silence’ back in December of 2010. On display at the gallery are acrylic, oil and watercolour paintings, around 25 of which have already been sold. Also on display at the gallery is Zena’s very first painting, which was bought by a close friend of her mother Brincy Colaco.
Another unique feature of the event was the didgeridoo performance by the artist’s brother, Brandon Colaco, during the inauguration. The didgeridoo is a wooden wind instrument developed by Indigenous Australians.
Zena is a winner of several awards including the Unique Golden Brush Talent Award by Lions Club District 317-D.
