Karkala: In a quick operation, a police team led by Karkala ASP Dr Sumana DP arrested the accused Biju TK hailing from Kerala in relation with the illegal storage of ammonium nitrate.

On October 21, based on a tip-off that huge amount of explosives were being stored at a private property, police had raided the spot and seized as much as 50 kgs of ammonium nitrate stored in 250 bags valued at Rs 4 lakh. However, Biju had managed to flee from the spot.

The property belongs to an individual named Wilson hailing from Kerala. Biju had taken the property on lease a few months ago and had built a shed there in order to store explosives for illegal activities.

Biju is said to be a habitual offender. In 2007, the then ASP Labhu Ram had seized explosives at Ajekar and arrested Biju. Also, in 2010, Kerala police with the help of Karkala police had again arrested Biju on similar charges.

Again in March 2014, the then ASP and present Udupi SP Annamalai had raided a place at Nakre Varnabettu and seized four loads of ammonium nitrate and arrested Biju. However, sources claim that he was brought out on bail by a Congress leader.

In the latest raid on October 21, Biju managed to flee from the spot.
