Udupi: District in-charge Minister Jayamala had some tough time when her own party workers gheraoed her in Udupi, demanding answer for why the party workers could not get protection during the recently held Bharath bundh.
The actor-turned-politician was in the city to take part in Gandhi Jayanth celebration on Tuesday when the incident took place.
The Congress party workers led by Ramesh Kanchan and others questioned the minister for not responding to the grievances of the party workers and failing to give protection to them during the Bharath Bandh.
The Congress workers said that during the Bharat Bandh in Udupi, the party workers had protested peacefully. Even then the police resorted to lathi-charge, which left many party workers injured.
Congress workers alleged that being a district in-charge minister, Dr Jayamala neither visited the injured party workers nor did she has condemn the incident. However, she later visited the SP’s house for Ganesh Chathurti.
Ramesh Kanchan told Jaymala that lathi charge against the Congress workers and municipal councilors during Bharath Bandh was uncalled for and it showed that there was no respect for elected representatives.
Jayamala said that her duty is to ensure that no untoward incidents take place in the district and she had instructed the SP to take action against wrongdoers during the bundh.
However, when partyworkers adamantly kept demanding SP Laxman Nimbargi’s transfer, the minister lost her cool and told partyworkers in clear terms that she would not tolerate this immature behaviour and left the venue.
