Udupi: Atrocities on Dalits and scheduled caste women has increased and the Udupi district police has not taken any measures to contain them, said Jayan Malpe, Udupi district Dalit leader.

He raised the issue during the Dalit and Scheduled castes meeting with K T Balakrishna, Superintendent of Police of Udupi district at District Police Headquarters meeting hall on Saturday, January 28.

Manjunath Giliyaru, another Dalit leader said that there was an incident amounting to atrocities on a Dalit woman in Manipal Police Station limits but the staff delayed accepting the complaint and registering an FIR. Police asked for a caste certificate at the time of filing the complaint, he added. In response to that, SP said that there was no need to provide caste certificate. Police should file a case immediately with regard to any kind of atrocity on women, he mentioned.

Several Dalit leaders told the SP that a lot of atrocities were taking place in various police stations of the district. Police should take a complaint, register the FIR and file a B report. SP said that in these cases any delay or improper investigations should be brought to his notice directly or over phone. He assured of action against the erring police officers.

Dalit leaders accused DySP Kumaraswamy of not performing his duties properly and deemed him unfit for his post. In the protest against illegal fish mill establishment at Hangarakatte, near Barkur, though the Kota Police were impartial in their duty, the accused DySp was not cooperative, they alleged.

One Dalit leader complained that the traffic police while on duty were busy with Facebook, WhatsApp and other things which, he suggested, should be taken care of by the top police officials. In Kodankur area, people from other states gamble with playing cards illegally but police were not taking action, he alleged.

Earlier Udupi DySP welcomed the gathering. Vishnuvardhan, Additional SP of Udupi district was also present at the meeting.
