Udupi: The Golden Tree Snake which is also popularly known as the “Flying Snake”, commonly found in the Malnad region of the state was found in the city, here on Saturday, March 30.
This snake rests on trees and flies from one tree to another.
According to snake specialist Gururaj Sanil’s statement to one of the Kannada dailies, this species of snake was commonly found in the Western Ghats forest range and was a rare site in the coastal region.
He said that this might have travelled in one of the vegetable carriers from the Malnad region.
“The snake was spotted between the vegetables brought in a carrier to one of the hotels at Malpe. I had received information that there was a weird snake spotted. I rushed to the spot and after seeing it, I was sure it is a flying snake”, he added.
Explaining its features, Gururaj Sunil said that they come in different variants and look very attractive. He said that people usually panic as they see a multi-coloured snake, thinking that they are poisonous and in this case, it was a similar instance here too.
He said that they weren’t poisonous and a rare species.
