Udupi: The members of the district unit of the Karnataka State Disabled and Care Givers Federation staged a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office here on Tuesday September 19.

The protest was held to demand the  regularisation of services of the Multi-purpose Rehabilitation Workers (MRWs) and Village Rehabilitation Workers (VRWs).

Federation president addressing the media said that though there are many programmes by both central and state government for disabled people, none of the benefits reach  the needy.

He also said that the employment provided by the MRWs and VRWs, also has limited benefits and the pay is very less. They demanded that the government should make MRWs and VRWs as permanent and  that their wages should be hiked.

Currently the MRWs receive Rs 4000 and VRWs receive Rs 1500 respectively, however it should hiked to Rs 8000 and Rs 5000 respectively, they said. They also demanded  pension allowance hike from Rs 500 to Rs 3000 and Rs 1200 to Rs 5000.
