Udupi: In a Democracy, the voters are the lords and these voters are being made aware of the importance of voting so that they exercise their right to vote in the elections without fail. Thereby also various programmes are being carried out under the Systematic Voter Education and Electoral Participation (SWEEP) programme.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has called for celebrating polling day in a festive manner and directed that polling booths be decorated in an attractive manner on polling day.

However, in Udupi, the District SWEEP Committee has gone a step further and a total of 1111 polling booths in the District in view of the Assembly General Elections – 2023 aims to create images depicting the traditional art, culture and grandeur of the District by decorating the polling booths in a very attractive manner.

Through the art teachers of the District, all the 1111 polling booths are engaged in the creation of paintings depicting the cultural grandeur of the District including Yakshagana, Kambala, Udupi saree, and Worli painting.

On a pilot basis, recently five polling booths at Hanumanthanagara School in Udupi, over 30 painting teachers decorated them with paintings in a single day.

Art teachers of Government Schools and some aided school teachers participated in the painting work at these polling stations and without any expectation of reward, they have diligently completed the task assigned to them as an election duty.

It is proposed to utilise all Government, private, aided and unaided painting teachers in this task to beautify all polling booths in the District in the coming days.

The Election Commission has asked one polling station in every Assembly constituency in all Districts to be decorated in the local traditional way. But the Udupi Zilla Panchayat Executive Officer has implemented it even more effectively by organising the task of drawing pictures depicting various art and culture practices of the District at all the polling stations in the District as an innovative idea.
