Udupi: We all know of watermelons that are red, but here is a man in the heart of Hridyalka in Udupi who has to offer you something different, the yellow watermelon that is said to be much sweeter and juicier than its bright red sister.
It all began back in 2003, when the paddy farming failed to make significant revenue and turned to this new venture he discovered from a Tumuru in 2017.
From then on, there was no looking back, till today, Suresh Nayak stands proudly among the yellow watermelons in his five acre farm. The watermelons are the products of a certain variety of seeds that come from Taiwan.
And now, all thanks to social media channels like Facebook and Twitter, the yellow watermelons are only growing in publicity and demand, with more and more people discovering the taste, sweetness and speciality of it.
However, the fruit, with its high juiciness, comes with its own set of challenges, like a shelf life that is much shorter than its more vibrant but less juicy sibling.
However, Nayak, on his part, is doing his best. Unlike conventional watermelon farmers, Nayak chooses to be innovative to the extent of using yellow sheets to protect his crops from pests.
His dedication sure has paid off as the farmer today has a number of curious visitors coming to his farm, learning all they can and getting the inspiration that they need to go back home to start a similar venture.
This means, surrounding towns can expect to see some of these yellow watermelons today.
While the red watermelons are not so bad, it would be nice to cut open a watermelon and be greeted with a sight of yellow and welcomed with a rush of sweet juice on the tongue.
