A Bengaluru-based designer has transformed public frustration over garbage into a digital solution aimed at improving civic accountability across the city.
Jyothish VM, 31, has created NammaKasa, a civic reporting platform that enables residents to report garbage and other public issues through photos on a live map in under 30 seconds. Built using open-source tools, the app does not require login, making it quick and easy for anyone to use.
Created to solve Bengaluru’s garbage problem
Jyothish said the idea came from repeatedly witnessing garbage piles and civic neglect in Bengaluru.
Instead of only complaining, he decided to build something that could help people act. What began as a simple effort to report garbage has now become a growing citizen-driven initiative.
Massive response within days
Launched on April 8, NammaKasa has already attracted around 45,000 users in just four days. More than 230 complaints have been logged, while two issues have already been resolved.
The response reflects strong public interest in cleaner neighbourhoods and better civic management.
Public map adds pressure for action
The platform publicly maps complaints and links them to elected representatives such as MPs and MLAs, helping increase visibility and accountability.
Future plans include working with Greater Bengaluru Authority and waste management teams to improve response systems.
More than just an app
Jyothish said NammaKasa will remain non-commercial and focused on public participation. While it currently targets garbage issues, the platform may soon expand to cover other civic concerns.
