In a remarkable feat of cardiac care, specialists at SDM Narayana Heart Centre in Dharwad, Karnataka, successfully carried out a rare, high-risk heart procedure that saved the life of a critically ill senior citizen battling multiple heart ailments.
The patient, Dayanand (name changed), had been experiencing severe chest discomfort for over five months. He was diagnosed with advanced calcific aortic stenosis and critical coronary artery disease—two major conditions that posed an imminent threat to his life.
Following an extensive assessment led by interventional cardiologist Dr. Ravi S. Jainapur, the treatment was carried out in two stages. First, the patient underwent a Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA), during which a stent was placed in the midsection of the Left Anterior Descending (LAD) artery—one of the heart’s primary blood vessels.
Subsequently, the team performed a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), a minimally invasive method to replace the severely narrowed aortic valve that had been hindering blood circulation.
Post-procedure, Dayanand’s condition improved significantly. His vital signs stabilised, and diagnostic reports indicated better heart function. He was soon discharged in a stable and recovering state.
Dr. Jainapur noted that TAVR, unlike traditional open-heart surgery, involves minimal physical trauma, reduced hospitalisation time, and faster recovery.
Shashikumar I. Pattanshetti, Facility Director, applauded the team’s commitment, stating that their skill and patient-centric care had made advanced heart treatment both effective and accessible.
