On Monday, mining tycoon and contentious Kalyana Karnataka leader Gali Janardhan Reddy formally combined his Kalyana Rajya Pragati Paksha (KRPP) political party with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He founded the KRPP in December 2022, and in the state’s assembly elections of 2023, he even emerged victorious as an MLA from the Gangavati seat.

Reddy said, “I feel happy and elated to be back to the BJP which is in my blood,” in an interview with reporters. I have always been a BJP supporter because the party runs in my family, and I want to see Narendra Modi as prime minister once more. I will work hard for the party in my area.

However, he did not clarify the role that he is going to play in the party. “Whatever party assigns me to do, I will take it up,” Reddy added.

During a recent meeting with Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi, Gali Janardhan Reddy, the accused in a multi-crore mining scam, announced his return to the saffron party. He made headlines recently for endorsing the Congress candidate in the Rajyasabha elections. Between 2008 and 2011, when BS Yediyurappa was the chief minister, he was a well-known BJP figure. Reddy was also a key player in Sushma Swaraj’s 1999 Lok Sabha campaign, in which she ran in Bellary against Sonia Gandhi.

There have been rumors regarding Gali Janardhan Reddy’s disagreements with BJP leaders ever since he was jailed on suspicion of engaging in illicit mining. He is free on bond since 2015 and is charged in a case involving millions of dollars in illegal mining. In addition to granting bail, the court ordered him to turn in his passport and refrain from leaving the nation without authorization.

Due to his poor reputation, the saffron party distanced itself from Reddy after that and he was allegedly refused permission to run for office in subsequent elections. As a result, he founded a new party and put candidates from the Kalyana, Karnataka, region up for election in the 2023 assembly elections.
