A disturbing rise in heart attack and sudden death syndrome cases among young adults has sent shockwaves through Hassan district. In just over a month, 17 individuals—most between the ages of 20 and 40—have died due to cardiac-related causes, prompting serious concern among health authorities.

The Department of Medical Education has launched an investigation into the trend, following directives from Minister Sharan Prakash Patil. He has asked Jayadeva Hospital, a renowned cardiac institution, to probe the deaths and submit a detailed report.

The minister categorically denied any link to COVID-19 vaccines, instead pointing to lifestyle factors. “We are witnessing sudden deaths among the younger population. Poor dietary habits, lack of physical activity, stress, and irregular lifestyles are contributing heavily,” said Patil, urging the youth to adopt healthier habits.

Among the victims is 37-year-old auto driver Govinda, who suffered chest pain while driving and managed to reach the hospital himself—only to be declared dead on arrival.

This spate of heart-related deaths has not only shaken the local community but has sparked concern across Karnataka. The sudden nature and frequency of these deaths—sometimes involving individuals as young as 19 or 20—has brought the issue into sharp public focus.

Medical authorities are now collecting data and studying the causes behind each case to determine patterns or commonalities, while urging preventive measures and early screenings for young adults.
