Haveri Roads in Disrepair Amid Financial Constraints and Delayed Repairs
Heavy rainfall last year has left major roads in Haveri district in a dire state, with numerous potholes disrupting travel and causing hazardous conditions. The Haveri-Guttal and Haveri-Hirekerur routes are particularly affected, while the Public Works Department (PWD) grapples with financial limitations that have hindered road maintenance efforts.
The once smooth roads have deteriorated into bumpy, pothole-filled paths, leading to excessive dust that is a nuisance for residents, particularly those living on the ground floor. During dry periods, the dust accumulates on porches and disrupts the well-being of locals. Additionally, the hazardous road conditions have resulted in frequent accidents, causing minor injuries to motorists.
The Guttal-Haveri, Savanur-Hosaritti, and Haveri-Savanur routes have also suffered extensive damage, presenting challenges for smaller vehicles. The issue extends to Haveri city, where poorly maintained roads have become unfit for travel. One such example is the 500-metre stretch from the Haveri RTO office to the highway bypass connecting old NH-48.
Local residents are frustrated with the authorities’ inaction. Krishna Kulkarni, a Haveri resident, expressed concern, highlighting the dangerous conditions, particularly for pregnant women. Mallikarjun Balehosur, a gram panchayat member, described the journey from Hosaritti to Haveri as a “nightmarish experience” due to constant vehicle breakdowns on the damaged roads.
NM Patil, the PWD executive engineer for Haveri, acknowledged the poor state of the roads and confirmed that work has already begun on the Haveri-Guttal route. He assured that pothole filling would start soon, as the tender process has been completed.
