Hubballi: The Hubballi-Dharwad police arrested a research scholar of Gandhi Krishi Vigyan Kendra (GKVK) Bengaluru in connection with the murder of a young woman from Vijayapura, carried out last year, incited by the movie ‘Drushyam’

Speaking to reporters on October 17, Hubballi-Dharwad Police Commissioner Pandurang H. Rane said, arrested Arun S. Patil killed Arpita Biradar whom he loved while during B.Sc (Agri) studies in Vijayapura.

Arun is said to have confessed to the crime during the last round of investigation, on October16. It is gathered, notes in his personal diary led to his arrest after several rounds of investigations where he was let off by the police, due to inconclusive evidence.

The murder came to light after a half-buried body of a woman was found in a field which belonged to farmer Jakir Hussain, along NH 4 on June 3, 2015. Within a week’s period Arpita’s father, Girimalla had filed a complaint with the Dharwad suburban police station stating that his daughter Arpita had gone missing from the premises of the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad. Later, he identified the body as his daughter’s.

Then, the police formed a special team headed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (crime and traffic) Mallikarjun Baladandi and Kasabapet police inspector Maruti S. Gullari, to investigate the case.

Arun, a resident of Vijayapura, was disturbed as Arpita had been forcing him time and again to marry her. On May 29, 2015 he called her up and asked her to come to Dharwad, the next day. On her arrival, he picked her and went to Gabbur cross on the outskirts of Hubballi in an auto rickshaw. There, he assaulted and strangled her before half-burying her body.

He returned to Bengaluru the same night, police said. He is said to have confessed to taking cues from the thriller movie ‘Drushyam’ to carry out the murder.
