Hubballi: Former Chief Minister and BJP leader Jagadish Shettar is in news for wrong reasons, after a family accused his brother of illegally grabbing their land and later attempted suicide by consuming poison.
The incident occurred in Hubballi, on Friday, when a woman and her son attempted suicide by consuming poison at the tahsildar office.
The mother, Sayeeda Shaikh, and son, Jaffar Shaikh, are the victims. Both of them were taken to KIMS hospital and are undergoing treatment.
They have also accused Hubballi suburban police for refusing to lodge a complaint against Jagadish Shettar and two BJP leaders, which they said, prompted them to take the extreme step.
It is learnt that the family is engaged in agriculture on 9.14 acres of land bearing survey No. 106 in Tarihal industrial area of Hubballi taluk.
According to sources, the woman had approached the BJP leader to resolve the land dispute in the family after the death of her father-in-law in 2007. She alleged that Pradeep Shettar had grabbed their ancestral property on the pretext of getting their property divided among the family members.
It is learnt that the price of the said land increased rapidly after the government took up the project to upgrade the nearby airport.
