Hubballi: The Hubballi Dharwad Muncipal Corporation (HDMC) authorities have proposed to clear all nalas, tanks, parks and graveyards of encroachment in twin cities, in order to prevent flood like situation arising out of untimely rains.
Taking cue from the situation happened in Bengaluru a couple of days ago due to torrential rains, the HDMC has finally woke up and has asked Survey department to provide details of nalas.
Mayor D.K. Chavan has directed the Muncipal Commissioner to collect all details of encroachment of Nalas, gardens, tanks, and graveyards, to form special teams, and to take action against the encroachment.
At the HDMC general body meeting held here on Wednesday, when Corporator Ganesh Tagargunti of the Congress moved a call attention motion seeking details of steps taken to clear the encroachment of Nalas and gardens, the HDMC officials stated that a letter has been written to the Survey Department (ADLR) to provide the details of Nalas.
HDMC Deputy Director of Town Planning B V Hiremath noted that building permissions are given considering the boundary of Nalas mentioned in the layout maps of the Hubballi-Dharwad Urban Development Authority (HDUDA).
Mr Tagargunti feared that the twin cities may also face the same situation as nalas here are also encroached. Nalas are in poor condition in many wards, and the HDMC officials have no information about these Nalas, he lamented.
Prakash Kyarkatti noted that the width of Nala has come down from 40 feet to 15 feet at some places, while buildings are constructed encroaching the Nala area,
