Bagalkot Shepherds to Receive Rifle Training for Self-Defense
Kalaburagi: In a first-of-its-kind initiative, shepherds in Bagalkot will be trained in rifle handling to combat rising sheep thefts. Following the murder of a shepherd at Halageri toll gate last month, district police have decided to arm the community with licensed firearms for protection.
Starting April 7, 600 shepherds will undergo six-day training on rifle operation, trigger control, and safety protocols. They will be issued Single- and Double-Barrel Breech Loader (SBBL & DBBL) guns, provided they pass background verification to prevent misuse.
Bagalkot SP Amarnath Reddy emphasized that the move aligns with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s directive to boost the confidence and security of the Kuruba community, which constitutes 3.5 lakh members in the district. He cited the Kodava model, where widespread firearm ownership has not led to misuse.
While traders highlight the economic necessity—with over 8,000 sheep, goats, and lambs traded weekly—critics fear potential weapon misuse. Wildlife researcher Samad Kottur raised concerns over poaching risks, suggesting CCTV surveillance and police patrols as alternatives.
Authorities maintain that any misuse will invite strict legal action, ensuring the initiative remains within the Arms Act framework.
