Kalaburagi jail transfers: notorious prisoners relocated amid controversy
Six inmates from Kalaburagi Central Jail, including terror suspect Zulfiqar linked to the 2013 Malleshwaram bombing, were transferred to various prisons across Karnataka on Thursday. The move followed court approvals and inspections triggered by allegations of misconduct within the jail.
Details of the Transfers:
- Zulfiqar: Moved to Dharwad Central Jail (NIA court approval).
- Zameer alias Bachchan: Transferred to Belagavi Central Jail (Shivamogga court approval).
- Abdul Qadir Jilani: Shifted to Dharwad Central Jail.
- Sheikh Saddam Hussain and Zakir: Relocated to Shivamogga Central Jail.
- Vishal Rathod: Sent to Ballari Central Jail.
Allegations and Reforms:
The inmates reportedly caused disturbances, influenced fellow prisoners and staff, and facilitated the smuggling of banned substances like gutkha and cigarettes. Some prisoners allegedly lived lavishly while extorting officials with compromising videos. Protests demanding contraband items further highlighted the jail’s issues.
The appointment of Dr. Anita as jailer ended these irregularities, halting illicit activities and income streams for some prison staff. The crackdown led to inspections by senior officials and the subsequent relocation of problematic inmates.
