Bellary: Despite government promises, financial difficulties plague various regions. An illustrative case is the plight of Kannada University in Hampi, which struggles due to insufficient funding for current bills, property taxes, and water expenses.
Established 30 years ago with the goal of promoting Kannada literature and culture, Kannada University in Hampi has nurtured research scholars, writers, and Kannada identity preservation. However, it now faces financial turmoil.
This fiscal year, the university received only 1.5 crores of the allocated 5 crores grant. Financial constraints have led to challenges in meeting current bills, property taxes, and water bills. Kamalapur municipal authorities issued notices for outstanding bills, including 90 lakhs for electricity and 50 lakhs for property taxes.
The university, dedicated to advancing the Kannada language, is seeking to clear the 90 lakhs electricity bill at a rate of 10 lakhs per month, complying with JESCOM’s request.
Vijayanagar in-charge minister Jameer has approached Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, requesting an additional grant of Rs 9.21 crore for Kannada University. During the Chief Minister’s upcoming visit to Hampi, the university’s governing body plans to address the financial challenges it faces. Protecting Kannada land and water is a shared responsibility, and Kannada enthusiasts urge Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to rescue the only Kannada university from its financial crisis.
