Ballari: “Religion” and “Caste” has always played a major role in Indian politics, be it in the Centre or the state. While Congress and its allies secure their vote banks with “Secularism”, BJP and its allies fight elections based on “Hindutva.” The blame game on who’s right and wrong continues. A similar situation of ‘religious politics’ has been reported during the Karnataka by-polls campaigning.

Former legislator from the Congress party, Basavaraj Rayareddy on Wednesday, December 4, has alleged that state housing department minister V Somanna and state law minister J C Madhu Swamy have campaigned in 15 by-poll assemblies in the name of religion.

Basavaraj has also filed a complaint on the same with the Election Commission.

He said, “Both the minister from Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa Cabinet have campaigned for Vijayapura BJP candidate Anand Singh saying that Veerashaiva and Lingayat votes that fall in favor of Anand Singh would also favor BSY and if they don’t it was like a tight slap on the face of BSY. This is purely religious politics.”

“Using religion and caste as agenda during the election campaign irrespective of political parties, is nothing but violation of Election Model Code of Conduct and an insult to those religion. Taking this into consideration both the ministers should be sent behind bar”, he added.
