Bidar: Social Worker Gurunath Vadde has submitted a memorandum to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) through the Bidar District Commisioner Govinda Reddy demanding that the model code of conduct be implemented six months before the elections.
Assembly elections in State are scheduled to be held in May. But for the last 5 to 6 months, sarees, cookers and money have been distributed to voters in Karnataka. Apart from this, voters are also being offered a site. Even at the Sahitya Sammelan, there are discourses from the dais asking people to support certain party, and the Sahitya Parishad’s conference is also being used for election campaigning. Ever since the model code of conduct came into force, there have been instances of cash, gold, sarees and articles being seized from the police in many places. This is how all in all, the voters are offered a variety of free items, sites and money when the model code of conduct comes into force, he said.
This is destroying the sanctity of Democracy, said Social Worker Gurunath Vadde and appealed to the Chief Election Commissioner to implement the model code of conduct six months in advance in the poll-bound States as people are unable to vote impartially and without fear.
