In response to the recent tragic rape and murder of a woman doctor in Kolkata, the Karnataka government has convened a meeting with medical organizations and announced the formation of a task force dedicated to ensuring the safety of doctors in the state. Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao led the meeting at Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru on Tuesday, which included representatives from various medical organizations and officials from the health department.
Minister Rao emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting women in the medical field, noting that over half of the medical workforce consists of women. The newly formed task force will deliver a report within a month on proposed safety measures, including the enforcement of existing laws and the introduction of new security protocols.
The meeting involved discussions on enhancing hospital security, such as installing CCTV cameras, providing wristbands and panic buttons, and conducting regular inspections with police cooperation. The task force will also consider recommendations for increasing public awareness about the laws protecting medical professionals.
Minister Rao highlighted recent legal amendments that prescribe harsher penalties for assaulting medical staff and stressed the importance of implementing these measures to prevent future incidents.
