The Karnataka government has launched a new initiative, ‘Ilakhea Adhikari/Sibbandi Nade Vidyarthinilayada Kade’ (Department Officials/Staff Visit to Hostels), aimed at improving the living conditions and environment of government-managed hostels. The program, which began today, will be held on the third Saturday of every month to ensure better management and facilities for students in hostels under the Department of Backward Classes Welfare.

The initiative aims to counter the perception that government hostels are neglected by involving senior department officials, including joint directors, deputy directors, assistant directors, and district- and taluk-level officers, in regular hostel inspections. These visits will help assess various factors such as hostel maintenance, safety, hygiene, and facilities.

Key areas of focus during the inspections include the condition of compound walls or fencing, garden development, safety measures like avoiding proximity to open water pits or power lines, and ensuring proper cleanliness in bathrooms, water tanks, and drainage systems. Officials will also evaluate the quality of bedding, structural repairs, and the overall safety of the buildings.

The initiative also emphasizes the educational and personal development of students. Hostels will be checked for the availability of libraries, competitive exam materials, personality development programs, and cultural activities. Other facilities like CCTV cameras and health kits will also be reviewed to enhance the overall student experience.

With approximately 68,803 pre-matric students and 1,75,033 post-matric students across 2,597 hostels, this program is a significant step toward improving the quality of life for students and supporting their holistic development.
