Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao assured that the state is prepared to manage any potential Mpox (monkeypox) outbreak. Although no formal screening measures for international passengers have been initiated, officials at entry points have been advised to monitor and test symptomatic passengers. The implementation of screening protocols will depend on directives from the Union government.
Key Points:
- Mpox Preparedness: No central government orders for screening at seaports and airports have been issued yet. Officials have been instructed to stay alert and test symptomatic individuals.
- Training and Vigilance: Doctors in district hospitals and medical institutions will be trained to handle Mpox cases. Vigilance is emphasized due to the WHO’s classification of Mpox as a global health emergency.
- Zika Virus: Nine cases of Zika virus have been detected in Karnataka. The focus is on caring for affected pregnant women, particularly in the Jigani area, with increased monitoring and testing.
Public Concern: Despite the WHO’s declaration of Mpox as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), a recent survey by LocalCircles shows low public concern in India. Only 6% of respondents expressed concern about Mpox, with a larger focus on other seasonal viral illnesses.
