Madikeri: On Monday, Kodagu Deputy Commissioner Venkat Raja announced the upcoming launch of a dedicated tourism website designed to showcase the district’s renowned temples, sacred sites, hotels, homestays, resorts, reservoirs, waterfalls, and other attractions. This announcement was made during the World Tourism Day program held at a city hotel, organized by the district administration, zilla panchayat, tourism department, and various tourism partners.
Emphasizing the significance of providing comprehensive information about holy places like Talacauvery and Bhagamandala, as well as natural attractions such as waterfalls, Venkat Raja stated that the website is set to go live by December. He urged the community to collaborate in promoting cleanliness and environmental awareness among tourists visiting Kodagu district. Raja advocated for the development of eco-tourism and discouraged the use of plastic in the area.
BR Nagendra Prasad, president of the District Chamber of Commerce, pointed out that around 100,000 visitors flock to the district on weekends, highlighting the need for greater environmental cleanliness. He proposed that local organizations should focus more on maintaining cleanliness and suggested positioning guards at holy and tourist sites.
Anitha Bhaskar, deputy director of the tourism department, revealed that Kodagu attracts approximately 4.7 million tourists annually, creating numerous employment opportunities. She noted that there are around 4,000 homestays in the district, with 2,010 currently registered and certified. Additionally, about 150 hotels and resorts operate in the area, with 53 establishments recognized by the Karnataka tourism department.
