Mysuru Plans Water Sports At Taraka And Nugu Dams To Boost Tourism

The Mysuru tourism department has proposed the introduction of water sports at the backwaters of Taraka and Nugu dams in HD Kote taluk, aiming to enhance tourism in the area. Located near the Dammanakatte Safari range in Bandipur Tiger Reserve, these dams offer a scenic backdrop for new recreational activities.

The department’s proposal to the state government includes developing essential infrastructure such as toilets, accommodation, and staff quarters. Planned water sports activities include cruise boats, skurfing, water scooters, jetting, and paddle boats. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to attract tourists and generate revenue, while also creating job opportunities for locals.

Prabhuswamy AN, Assistant Director of Tourism, has requested the HD Kote tahsildar and other local officials to identify suitable locations in the dams’ backwaters. This effort aligns with the state forest department’s ongoing promotion of eco-tourism and safari activities in the Bandipur Tiger Reserve area.

HD Kote MLA Anil Chikkamadu has urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to approve the proposal, highlighting the potential for increased tourist traffic to the region. He noted that many visitors to the nearby Dammanakatte Wildlife Safari would likely be interested in water sports at Taraka dam.

In addition to water sports, the government is investing ₹7 crore in infrastructure improvements around Taraka and Nugu dams, including new approach roads, lighting, fencing, and CCTV cameras to enhance safety.
