For the second time in less than a month, the Deputy Commissioner’s (DC) office in Kolar received a hoax bomb threat on Tuesday morning, triggering security concerns and a swift response from district authorities.

According to officials, the threat was conveyed through an email sent to the DC’s office. As in the earlier incident, the alarming message appeared not in the body of the email but in its subject line. The subject claimed that an RDX-based improvised explosive device (IED) had been planted inside the DC office premises.

Confusing content raises suspicion

Interestingly, officials found that while the subject line mentioned a bomb threat, the actual content of the email was unrelated. The mail reportedly spoke about a fake passport racket, raising immediate suspicion about its authenticity.

Despite the inconsistencies, authorities treated the threat seriously, following standard operating procedures. Security personnel conducted checks of the premises to ensure there was no danger to staff or visitors.

Officials term it a hoax, probe on

Preliminary checks indicated that the threat was fake, similar to the earlier hoax received last month. However, district officials said such incidents cannot be taken lightly, especially given the sensitive nature of government offices.

Police have launched an investigation to trace the origin of the email and identify those responsible for sending repeated hoax threats. Cybercrime experts are expected to assist in tracking the sender, as the misuse of email and anonymous digital tools has made such threats easier to issue.

Rising concern over hoax threats

Officials expressed concern over the repeated targeting of the DC office, noting that hoax threats divert security resources and create unnecessary panic among government employees and the public.

Authorities have warned that those found guilty of issuing false bomb threats will face strict legal action under relevant sections of the law.

The district administration has urged citizens to remain calm and not spread rumours, reiterating that all necessary precautions are being taken to ensure public safety.
