As a reaction to the recent proposal from the Karnataka government regarding signboards, the Maharashtra government has now forward with a lawsuit which it plans to file at the Bombay High Court.

This was mainly after the pro-Maharashtrian groups in Belagavi decided to carry out an opposition against the proposal, expressing their concern to the Maharashtra CK Eknadh Shinde at Kolhapur, demanding that the advisory committee come together to address the issue.

They stated how there were Marathi speaking residents in Karnataka and a proposal like this would only go on to harass them.

They also mentioned how Marathi citizens did not enjoy their constitutional rights, like the free health insurance schemes that Maharashtra introduced in Belagavi.

The introduction of 60 percent kannada language on business name boards has only added to their grievances, leading them to file a lawsuit with the Bombay High Court.

However, senior advocate of Karnataka State Border Protection Commission SM Kulkarni later stated how an interstate matter like this should be taken up with the supreme court.

He further stated that Maharashtra has already filed a suit with the Supreme court regarding border disputes with Karnataka and hence need only to add this as a supplementary to the suit it has already filed against Karnataka.

The groups, on meeting Shinde, further expressed their disappointment on the advisory committee that seemed to be so inactive ever since it was formed last year in 2023, especially with regard to linguistic concerns in the state.
