Misuse of funds by 17 state Varsities; State to appoint probe committees

Shivamogga: As many as 17 state universities will soon be under the scanner as the government has decided to set up district-level committees headed by Deputy Commissioners of the respective districts to look into the misappropriate of funds in development works taken up by the universities.

Minister for Higher Education Basavaraj Rayaraddi told mediapersons here on Friday that Zilla panchayat account officers and superintending engineers from PWD would be the members of the panels.

This move comes in wake of the fact that the varsities have made payments exceeding the estimated cost of the projects over the last ten years and this excess payment itself stands at a whopping Rs 600 cr. Further, the projects were also undertaken violating the norm that clearly states that Cabinet approval had to be obtained for projects with an estimated cost of more than Rs 5 crore. The committees would be directed to submit their reports by January 15, 2017, he added.
