Mandya has made notable strides in reducing tuberculosis (TB) cases, marking a substantial healthcare achievement. This progress aligns with the TB Mukt Panchayat Initiative launched by the Government of India on World TB Day, March 24, 2023. Last year, 16 gram panchayats (GPs) in the district were declared TB-free, and plans are underway to declare 46 more GPs as TB-free, pending approval from the central TB division. This move would result in over 30% of Mandya’s 233 GPs achieving TB-free status.
Dr. MN Ashalatha, the district TB officer, attributed the 40% reduction in new TB cases to the collaborative efforts of local healthcare workers. She explained that the successful initiative involved stringent criteria, including testing a minimum of 30 samples per 1,000 population and maintaining a low number of TB cases. Last year, 16 out of 66 GPs met these criteria, and officials are optimistic that 46 more GPs will follow suit in 2024.
The district’s success is largely due to community engagement, with Anganwadi and ASHA workers, schoolteachers, and local residents playing a pivotal role in raising awareness. TB patients are provided free treatment and nutritional support, with financial incentives encouraging grassroots participation. Monthly meetings help monitor progress and address challenges, ensuring the initiative’s continued success.
Mandya’s approach is a model for other districts, contributing to India’s goal of eliminating TB by 2025.
