Six individuals were arrested in Mandya district in connection with a female foeticide racket, bringing the total number of arrests in the case to 36. The suspects were identified as N Ramakrishna and B Guru from Bannur, Somesekhar from Mysuru, Naveen HK from Hiremarali village, Shankara GN from KR Nagar, and Jabbar from Haralahalli.
District SP Mallikarjun S Baladandi reported that the accused had charged between ₹25,000 and ₹75,000 for each abortion, performing at least 3,000 procedures since 2020. The arrests follow an earlier bust in Bengaluru, which uncovered an illegal gender scanning centre in Mandya.
Three doctors and 12 other individuals have been arrested previously, along with a health department ambulance driver involved in the illegal activities. Local MLA Darshan Puttannaiah emphasized the need for stringent action against such practices to prevent further decline in female birth rates.
