Mangaluru: After the Karnataka Cabinet renamed Bengaluru Rural as Bengaluru North, voices have intensified demanding that Dakshina Kannada be officially renamed Mangaluru. The idea has gained traction on social media and was recently discussed in an online meet involving leaders from political, religious, and cultural organisations.

MP Capt Brijesh Chowta emphasized that most districts are named after their headquarters and noted Mangaluru’s historical relevance, including its link to Goddess Mangalambike. He pointed out that residents are globally recognized as “Mangalureans.”

KPCC General Secretary Padmaraj R Poojary supported the proposal, highlighting that Mangaluru is already known by names such as Kudla, Kodiala, Maikala, and Mangalore. He said renaming the district would align it with popular identity.

Sri Rajashekarananda Swamiji of Vajradehi Mutt stressed the importance of a name that represents the region’s deep-rooted cultural legacy. MLA Vedavyas Kamath backed the demand, adding that the district could also be identified as Tulunadu, instead of the broader Karavali term.

Other supporters of the renaming include MLA Dr Y Bharath Shetty, Tulunada Rakshana Vedike President Yogish Shetty Jeppu, and ex-Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy head Dayanand Kattalsar. They argue that renaming the district would better reflect the local language, identity, and heritage.
