The State Election Commission (SEC) is awaiting the final notification for ward-wise reservation to proceed with the announcement of elections for Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC). The SEC emphasized that the state government is responsible for finalizing the ward delimitation and reservation for the city’s 60 wards. If the process is delayed, the SEC will follow the Supreme Court’s directions. Once the state government issues the final gazette notification regarding reservations, the SEC will take immediate action. Notifying ward-wise delimitation and reservation is the initial step in any election process, according to the SEC’s response to a citizen’s request for elections in the MCC.
“The SEC will act promptly to hold elections once the state government publishes the final notification,” the SEC confirmed. In case of any delay, the SEC will proceed as directed by the Supreme Court, using the current reservation. The BJP’s five-year term in MCC will conclude on February 28, and both the ruling BJP and the Congress opposition are urging the government to finalize ward-wise reservations as soon as possible.
Senior Congress Corporator Naveen D’Souza mentioned that the urban development department has been informed about the nearing end of the MCC term. He stressed that the SEC requires at least three months to prepare for the election, including finalizing the voters’ list and the election schedule. BJP leader Premanand Shetty added that the BJP is prepared for the election and urged the state government to expedite the reservation process to allow the SEC to conduct the election on time.
