In a significant shift, the Government PU College in Derlakatte, established in 2022, has officially been converted into an all-women’s college beginning this academic year. The decision comes after consistently low enrollment of male students and growing demand from local communities for a dedicated girls’ institution.

While the second-year batch will continue with male students for now, first-year admissions are restricted to girls in the arts and commerce streams. This development makes it the first government women’s PU college in Ullal taluk, and the fourth such college in Dakshina Kannada district, joining institutions in Balmatta, Carstreet, and Puttur.

Rajeshwari, DDPU of Dakshina Kannada, confirmed that following local appeals and recommendations by the college development committee, the department approved the transition. “A week ago, I personally visited the college to assess infrastructure before granting approval. Though the college currently operates in a high school building, plans are in place for a dedicated facility,” she noted.

Principal Satyaprema K shared that the college currently has around 50 enrolled students, with admissions ongoing. She expressed hope to introduce the science stream in future academic years.

The college serves students from nearby villages including Pavoor, Harekala, Manjanady, Konaje, Kinya, Belma, and Thokkottu. Officials believe the establishment of a new PU college at Newpadpu, initiated by Harekala Hajabba, further impacted male admissions in Derlakatte.

The college is currently staffed with a principal, two permanent faculty, two deputed teachers, and guest lecturers, operating out of five classrooms and a staff room.
