Expert Committee Approves Continued Work on Kulai Fishing Harbour Project
An expert committee, formed to address concerns surrounding the Kulai fishing harbour project, has recommended that the New Mangaluru Port Authority (NMPA) proceed with the ongoing works while ensuring quality and standards are met to benefit the local fishermen community.
The project began on March 20, 2023, with the construction of the Southern and Northern Breakwaters. The Southern Breakwater, measuring 262 meters, is nearly complete, while the Northern Breakwater, 831 meters long, is partially finished up to 560 meters. Despite these advancements, local traditional fishermen raised concerns about aspects such as the breakwater length and layout, leading to escalations to local politicians and government officials.
On September 27, 2024, the Director of Fisheries, Karnataka, instructed NMPA to halt the work until a solution was reached in consultation with various stakeholders, including the Minister of Fisheries, Ports, and Inland Waterways. As a result, work was paused on October 16, 2024.
To address these concerns, a three-member technical committee from NIO Goa, NIOT Chennai, and NCCR Chennai was formed. The committee conducted a Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) GPS survey on January 6, 2025, which was reviewed by NITK Surathkal and other officials. The survey confirmed that the alignment of the breakwaters met the original layout proposed by NMPA.
The committee has advised NMPA to resume work, ensuring that the project meets all quality standards for the benefit of the local fishing community.
