A 22-year-old man from Mangaluru was recently booked by Powai police for unauthorised entry into the prestigious IIT-Bombay campus, where he illegally attended classes for several days, according to media sources.
Identified as Bilal Teli, the youth reportedly entered the campus on June 4 and stayed inside until his detention on June 19, while pretending to be a student. His presence was discovered after a professor requested his student ID during a session. Unable to produce one, he fled the spot, leading to his eventual arrest and handover to the police.
Quoting DCP (Zone X) Datta Nalawade, a TOI report stated that nothing suspicious was found in his possession. Bilal allegedly told police that he had initially come for a one-day academic event, but stayed on because of his eagerness to sit in on engineering lectures.
According to the complaint filed by IIT-B officials, they had first noticed the intruder on June 4 when he was seen entering office areas without clearance. Upon being confronted, he escaped. Security teams were alerted with CCTV images, but couldn’t trace him then.
Later, he was caught inside a lecture hall, quietly attending a class. During questioning, Bilal confessed to not being enrolled at IIT and revealed that he had illegally resided on campus between June 2–7 and again from June 10.
A senior professor expressed shock, raising concerns about motive, access to sensitive data, and his living arrangements during the stay.
